It’s interesting how whenever this comes up, mainstream Mormons say that the church does not approve of Polygamy anymore. The church was okay with it at some point. Why was it okay then and not okay now?

Also, even the main church STILL teaches that polygamy will be standard in the Celestial Kingdom. I remember when I had that lesson in YW and when I registered my distaste at the idea, my teacher said that, once my selfish desires were removed in heaven, I would be okay with it!

One word: expediency. The Church found itself pushed into a corner by the anti-polygamy laws of the nation and so felt it had no choice but to abandon polygamy or face the very real possibility that the Mormon way of life would soon be at an end.

***…once my selfish desires were removed in heaven, I would be okay with it!***

A pretty standard Mormon response. And it completely contradicts this Book of Mormon teaching: “…that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.” (Alma 34:34) Any distaste you have for polygamy has to be purged from you in the here and now or it will follow you into the eternities. Hate polygamy in lfe, hate polygamy in the afterlife.
